A large fire tore through a secondhand goods market near the weekly market in Guercif late Thursday night, causing significant damage to merchandise but sparing human lives.

Eyewitnesses described the flames spreading rapidly, engulfing items prepared for sale, including clothing, used furniture, and other goods.

Emergency response teams, including local and security authorities, arrived promptly at the scene. Firefighting crews deployed two trucks to contain the blaze and prevent it from reaching adjacent areas. Police have opened an investigation into the fire under the direction of the local prosecutor’s office, but the cause remains undetermined.

Residents praised the swift intervention of firefighters for preventing a larger catastrophe. However, they criticized the state of the market, which they described as disorderly and lacking basic safety measures.

The fire has renewed calls for improved safety infrastructure in public markets across the region to prevent similar incidents in the future.
