A security operation conducted jointly by the National Security forces, Customs, and the Royal Gendarmerie on Monday evening at the El Guerguerat border post, south of the city of Dakhla, successfully thwarted an attempt to traffic a shipment of 3.575 metric tons of cannabis resin (locally known as chira ) aboard an international transport truck registered in Morocco, according to a security source.
The truck was subjected to a thorough search using sniffer dogs, which led to the discovery of the cannabis resin concealed within a shipment of frozen fish, the same source reported. The driver of the truck used in the attempted drug trafficking, a 29-year-old Moroccan citizen, was also arrested.
A preliminary investigation has been opened under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor to clarify the circumstances of the case, identify those involved, and uncover the extent of these criminal activities both in Morocco and on a regional and international scale, the source emphasized.
This joint operation is part of the intense and ongoing efforts by various security services at the El Guerguerat border post to combat international drug and psychotropic trafficking, as well as to monitor and counter all forms of transnational crime, the source concluded.
