A recent study from University College London revealed that men lose 17 minutes of life with every cigarette, while women lose 22 minutes.
The research, based on long-term health studies, showed that each cigarette reduces life expectancy by an average of 20 minutes. Researchers emphasized that the damage caused by smoking is “cumulative,” meaning the earlier one quits, the more years of life they can gain.
According to the analysis, commissioned by the UK Department of Health and Social Care, a smoker who consumes 10 cigarettes a day could avoid losing an entire day of life by quitting on January 1st—by January 8th.
These findings highlight the importance of quitting smoking and demonstrate that health benefits are noticeable even in the short term.
