Moroccan YouTuber Ilyas El Malki was sentenced to two months in prison by the Court of Appeal in El Jadida on Monday after being accused of inciting hatred and discrimination. The case had been initially filed by several Amazigh associations and figures, who later withdrew their complaints.
The court reduced El Malki’s sentence from four months to two months, allowing him to be released from prison later the same day.
El Malki was originally sentenced to four months in prison for violating public decency but was acquitted of charges related to inciting hatred and discrimination, which were at the center of the complaints. The plaintiffs, consisting of Amazigh associations and individuals, dropped the charges before the verdict.
In a separate case, El Malki was sentenced last Thursday to a three-month suspended prison sentence. This followed an earlier conviction of three months in prison and a fine of 2,000 dirhams.
The charges in the second case included “inciting discrimination and hatred using electronic means, gender discrimination, spreading false claims to damage people’s private lives, defamation, verbal abuse against women, and psychological, physical, and economic violence against women.”
This ruling comes after 38 women’s and human rights associations filed a complaint with the Public Prosecutor over El Malki’s online content.
