A court in northern Morocco sentenced two women to prison on Thursday over the death of an infant inside an unlicensed daycare center, in a case that shocked public opinion.
The Tangier Court of Appeal’s criminal chamber sentenced each defendant to two years in prison after finding them guilty of professional negligence, endangering a vulnerable child and failing to report a felony that led to the infant’s death, according to judicial sources.
The court said the defendants left the infant unsupervised in an unmonitored area and operated a childcare facility without legal authorization or basic safety standards.
They were also accused of failing to immediately inform the infant’s family about the situation and attempting to conceal key details of the incident.
The case dates back to the death of a baby inside an unlicensed nursery in the Bni Makada neighborhood of Tangier. Investigators said a child aged about 8 years was involved in the fatal incident, though further details were not disclosed.
A judge had previously ordered the pretrial detention of the two women in late September while investigations were ongoing. Authorities later confirmed that the nursery operator did not have official authorization to run the facility and lacked minimum safety requirements.
Lawyers representing the civil party urged the court to impose harsher penalties, arguing that the defendants attempted to evade responsibility and failed to promptly notify the family of the infant’s condition.
The ruling comes amid renewed scrutiny of unregulated childcare centers in Morocco, particularly in densely populated urban neighborhoods where informal nurseries often operate without oversight.
