Morocco’s Minister of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, Ahmed Toufiq, unveiled the Supreme Scientific Council’s recommendations on revising the Family Code, aligning with King Mohammed VI’s directive to engage scholars in the process.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Toufiq said the council reviewed 17 proposed amendments and provided alternative solutions that uphold Sharia principles. Three issues, including genetic testing for lineage, abolishing male-relative inheritance rules, and interfaith inheritance, were deemed non-negotiable due to their basis in definitive Islamic texts.

Toufiq emphasized Morocco’s unique adherence to Islamic legal traditions through the allegiance system, which he described as ensuring the preservation of religion, life, intellect, livelihood, and dignity.

The council recommended alternative solutions for contentious issues. For children born out of wedlock, fathers would share financial responsibility without establishing legal lineage. In inheritance cases, alternatives such as gifting instead of wills were proposed.

Toufiq highlighted the scholars’ role in addressing societal and economic challenges while maintaining moral guidance, urging solutions that align with Quranic principles of mutual respect between spouses.

The recommendations will be considered in the ongoing revision of the Family Code, which aims to balance religious integrity with contemporary needs.
