A total of 24,162 mutual consent divorces were recorded in Morocco in 2023, according to Justice Minister Abdellatif Ouahbi.
Additionally, 341 cases of revocable divorce were registered, out of 249,089 marriages during the same period.
In response to a question at the House of Representatives, read on his behalf by Minister Delegate for Relations with Parliament, Mustapha Baitas, Ouahbi emphasized that the Justice Ministry had implemented several measures to curb the rising divorce rate.
These include raising awareness about the importance of pre-marital preparation and exploring ways to establish a family mediation system within family justice services. The role of social support cells in mediating between spouses and facilitating reconciliation has also been strengthened.
Ouahbi also pointed out that Morocco’s Family Code mandates an attempt at reconciliation between spouses before divorce proceedings can continue.
He highlighted that judges can seek assistance from institutions, entities, and individuals to help facilitate this reconciliation process.
This reconciliation effort is a key procedure in family law, entrusted to judges under their official duties, Ouahbi noted, underscoring the government’s commitment to reducing divorce rates through both legal and social measures.
