A court in El Jadida has imposed a travel ban on a local lawyer amid allegations that he attempted to extort a parliamentarian who also serves as president of the Moulay Abdellah Municipality. The lawyer, whose identity has not been disclosed, has had his passport revoked and remains under judicial supervision, officials said.
The case, which has drawn national attention, centers on accusations brought by Moulay Mehdi El Fatemi, the municipality’s president and a recently elected parliamentarian. Al-Fatemi alleges the lawyer demanded 500,000 MAD (approximately $50,000) in exchange for dropping a potential legal complaint based on a Ministry of Interior inspection report on the municipality’s operations.
According to court documents, El Fatemi submitted an audio recording as evidence, claiming it captures the lawyer making the extortion demand. He filed the complaint with Morocco’s Public Prosecution Office, which referred the matter to the Judicial Police for investigation.
The public prosecutor sought to have the lawyer detained; however, an investigative judge ruled that the lawyer could remain free under strict conditions, including the travel ban. The prosecutor has since appealed the decision, with the Court of Appeals expected to issue a ruling in the coming weeks.
The accused lawyer has denied all charges, stating he did not meet with El Fatemi and disputing the authenticity of the audio recording.
