Rabat City Council members, including representatives from both the majority and opposition, have requested an investigation into allegations that municipal employees received a bribe of 700,000 dirhams ($70,000) to pass professional competency exams.
The call for action came during an extraordinary council session last week, where members of the Democratic Left Federation accused employees present at the meeting of being involved in the bribery scheme.
“These are serious accusations that require judicial intervention, as no one is above the law,” Mayor Fatima El Modini said in response to the claims.
Farouk El Mehdawi, a councilor from the opposition Democratic Left Federation, said the allegations demand immediate legal procedures. “The mayor’s response was vague and unsatisfactory,” El Mehdawi told reporters. “We will not remain silent and will defend the integrity of these exams.”
The controversy comes amid ongoing criticism of Rabat’s urban planning project, which has raised fears of displacement among residents of neighborhoods such as Yaacoub El Mansour and Youssoufia. The opposition claims the project was developed unilaterally without input from residents or civil society groups.
A source from the council majority supported the call for an investigation, stating, “The exams took place under normal conditions, but such serious accusations warrant transparency and accountability.”
Council members formalized their request on Monday, urging Mayor El Modini to open an immediate investigation and refer the matter to the public prosecutor’s office if necessary.
