The European Parliament (EP) has officially dissolved the “Western Sahara” intergroup, which had been one of Algeria’s tools for pressure and lobbying within the European Parliament, aiming to promote separatist claims in Morocco.
On November 12, the Conference of Presidents officially confirmed the dissolution of this group, and the decision will be made formal after it is published during the next plenary session of the European Parliament.
Since its creation 20 years ago, the “Western Sahara” intergroup, which replaced a previous similar group called “Peace for the Sahrawi People,” had gathered Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) who supported the Polisario separatists, were close to the Algerian regime, and were particularly opposed to Morocco and its territorial integrity.
However, with Spain—formerly the colonial power in the Sahara—shifting its stance by recognizing Morocco’s sovereignty, and with France also taking a supportive position, there was no longer a reason to maintain an intergroup that no longer reflected the majority of voices from the MEPs of the represented countries.
In fact, it was the bloc of liberals and democrats, represented by the Renew Europe group and Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE) MEPs, who opposed the continuation of this intergroup, voting overwhelmingly against its renewal.
