Morocco has climbed one spot on the 2024 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Index, ranking 69th out of 167 countries with a score of 70.9, according to the latest report by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network.

This ranking places Morocco above the regional average of 66.66. Morocco ranked 70th in 2023 and 84th in 2022

The report noted Morocco’s significant progress in achieving the SDGs, reflecting advancements in various sectors despite ongoing challenges in others.

Morocco has made strides in reducing poverty and promoting renewable energy, particularly solar and wind power.

However, the report also indicates that Morocco needs to bolster its efforts in healthcare, gender equality, and climate action.

While Morocco made progress in these areas, disparities remain, such as in access to quality healthcare and gender equality in the economic and social spheres.

A particularly positive finding is Morocco’s performance on the international dependency index, which measures the impact of a country’s sustainable development policies on others.

With a score of 94.7, Morocco’s influence in the region, particularly in trade and environmental matters, is considered “very good.”

Despite these achievements, Morocco still faces challenges, including improving education and vocational training, enhancing community participation in sustainable development, and strengthening environmental protection efforts.

Morocco has the opportunity to accelerate its progress by investing in green technologies, promoting inclusive education, and deepening international partnerships that support sustainable economic and social growth.

According to the report, European countries, especially those in the Nordic region, continue to lead the world in sustainable development. Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, and France hold the top five positions in the 2024 SDG Index. However, even these advanced nations face challenges in fully achieving the SDGs.

Developing countries, such as those in the BRICS and BRICS+ groups, have made progress in recent years, surpassing the global average. East and South Asia have emerged as regions with substantial advancements towards the SDGs.

Unfortunately, the gap between the world’s wealthiest and poorest nations continues to widen. The least developed countries, including Small Island Developing States, are lagging behind in their progress towards the SDGs.
