Search efforts have intensified at Sednaya Prison, Syria’s largest detention facility, as rescue teams look for detainees held in underground cells. Non-governmental organizations have long reported that prisoners at Sednaya were subjected to systematic torture.
The operations come as Damascus celebrates the fall of President Bashar al-Assad’s regime following a swift and decisive offensive by opposition forces. The end of Assad’s rule marks a historic turning point, bringing an end to over five decades of Assad family dominance in Syria.
The White Helmets, a volunteer rescue organization, announced that emergency teams have been deployed to Sednaya Prison, located 30 kilometers north of Damascus, to search for secret underground cells where detainees are believed to be held.
According to the organization, the deployed units include specialized teams for search and rescue, wall excavation, opening reinforced doors, and canine units trained for recovery missions. Medical teams are also on site to provide immediate care to any survivors.
