The 18th edition of the World Congress of the Most Beautiful Bays officially kicked off, on Thursday in Dakhla, bringing together representatives from 44 bays worldwide.
Held under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, this global congress, running until December 1st, serves as a platform for dialogue, debate, and the exchange of experiences on various topics related to the preservation and enhancement of bays and sustainable development.
Initiated by the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab Regional Council, with the support of local authorities, the congress highlights the region’s tourism and economic potential, as well as efforts to promote sustainable and inclusive development.
Speaking at the event, Regional Council President El Khattat Yanja stressed that the preservation of bays is now an absolute necessity, noting that Morocco has adopted a strategic approach aimed at balancing economic growth with environmental protection.
“The Bay of Dakhla, with its unique biodiversity, is a true haven for numerous marine and avian species and plays a vital role in the chain of coastal environmental protection,” he stressed, highlighting this ecologically significant site is classified as a RAMSAR site, reflecting Morocco’s commitment to safeguarding and preserving this exceptional wetland area.
“Morocco, under the enlightened vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, has made significant efforts to address challenges related to natural resource management and environmental protection,” he continued.
The President of the Regional Council pointed out that the Kingdom has implemented a series of measures to safeguard natural resources, particularly through ambitious policies for coastal zone management and marine biodiversity conservation.
For his part, Louis Thébault, President of the World’s Most Beautiful Bays Association, expressed his satisfaction with the choice of Dakhla to host such a major event, praising the participation of numerous African delegations and highlighting the importance of exchanging ideas on the environmental challenges they face.

This is the second time Morocco has hosted this prestigious event, following the edition held in Agadir in 2004. In addition to Agadir and Al Hoceima, Dakhla joined the World’s Most Beautiful Bays Organization in 2019 during the meeting held in Toyama, Japan. In 2022, at the congress in Cambodia, Dakhla was unanimously chosen to host this 18th edition.
Founded in 1997, the World’s Most Beautiful Bays Association works to preserve and enhance the biodiversity of these exceptional natural treasures while promoting sustainable tourism. Based in Vannes, France, this international network now includes 44 bays from 25 countries across various continents.
