Israel’s opposition leader, Yair Lapid proposed a regional committee including Morocco to address Lebanon and Gaza conflicts, counter Iran, and advance normalization with Saudi Arabia.
The plan aims to start negotiations with the Palestinian Authority on a potential future separation from Israel. Lapid proposed Riyadh as the venue for these discussions.
The proposal calls for a six-month ceasefire in Lebanon and Gaza, during which a coalition of Moroccan, Emirati, Egyptian, and Palestinian forces would oversee humanitarian aid and reconstruction in Gaza.
Lapid said that Israel has no intention of reoccupying Gaza or southern Lebanon but reserves the right to conduct operations beyond its borders.
To stabilize the region, a newly trained Lebanese force would be deployed, with increased salaries to counter Hezbollah’s recruitment incentives, his plan detailed.
A multi-national civilian body, including representatives from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the EU, the US, and Abraham Accords signatories like Morocco, would oversee Gaza’s governance.
The Palestinian Authority’s role would be diminished, focusing solely on humanitarian aid and reconstruction.
A regional coalition would be formed to mitigate Iran’s nuclear ambitions and its growing influence through armed proxies across the Middle East.
The coalition would use both diplomatic and military strategies to limit Iran’s regional dominance.
The plan also seeks to strengthen cooperation between Israel and Abraham Accords nations, including Morocco, through joint committees addressing regional challenges.
These efforts would build on the framework of the Negev Forum, which promotes economic and security collaboration among signatory countries.
Lapid’s proposal also seeks a long-term “future separation” between Israel and the Palestinians, which would require reforms within the Palestinian Authority. In return, Israel would refrain from annexing parts of the West Bank.
