Bourita: EU-Morocco relations at pivotal moment, must be backed by action
Monday 25 November 2024 - 13:57

Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita on Monday urged the European Union to move from words to action in its partnership with Morocco, calling the relationship with Brussels a “critical moment” amid ongoing legal and economic challenges.

Speaking at a joint press conference with EU Neighborhood and Enlargement Commissioner Olivér Várhelyi, Bourita said the EU must clarify how it plans to address these challenges and offer practical solutions that reflect its commitment to the partnership. He emphasized that Morocco expects tangible results, not just commitments.

Bourita’s comments come in the wake of a European Court of Justice ruling that suspended trade agreements with Morocco, a decision that continues to loom over EU-Morocco relations. “The ball is in the EU’s court now to provide answers and solutions,” Bourita said.

He also reiterated Morocco’s stance, citing a recent speech by King Mohammed VI in which the monarch affirmed that Morocco will not sacrifice national sovereignty for any partnership. “Morocco is committed to its partnership with the EU,” Bourita said, “but not at any cost or by crossing red lines.”

Bourita concluded by urging the EU to turn its commitments into concrete actions, stressing that “the partnership must be based on solid, real-world results.”

During his visit, Várhelyi is scheduled to meet with, Finance Minister Nadia Fettah Alaoui, and Mohamed Benchaâboun, Director-General of the Mohammed VI Investment Fund.

The visit includes the signing of a €190 million agreement for an integrated reconstruction program aimed at revitalizing areas hit by the September 2023 earthquake.

This €225 million initiative will support affected populations, rebuild essential public services, and help revive the local economy. Várhelyi will also visit the El Menzeh wastewater treatment plant, part of the EU’s support for Morocco’s National Sanitation Plan, which has been backed by the European Union since 2020 through the Economic and Investment Plan for the Southern Neighbourhood.
