Morocco, a key player in addressing climate change, has made a notable participation in the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), wrapped up on Sunday in Baku, after two intense weeks packed with activities.
The Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch, who represented His Majesty King Mohammed VI at the High-Level Segment for Heads of State and Government, held as part of COP29, drew attention to the Kingdom’s experience in coping with climate change.
Under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty the King, Morocco has been committed for many years to playing a major role in the energy transition, at national, international and continental levels, said Akhannouch. He noted that in line with the Sovereign’s enlightened vision, renewable energies in Morocco today account for around 40% of electricity production capacity, a proportion that is set to rise to 52% by 2030.
Akhannouch, who led a high-ranking delegation including the Minister of Energy and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, was welcomed to the COP site by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, and the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres.
The Moroccan Pavilion, attracting participants from all over the world on a daily basis, provided a forum for intense exchange and debate between Moroccan and foreign institutions and experts on a wide range of topics.
For nine days, the Pavilion highlighted the Kingdom’s role in developing sustainable models adapted to global climate challenges, as well as innovative projects in other sectors, such as energy efficiency, sustainable agriculture and water management.
It also enabled fellow African countries to present their respective experiences and local actions in climate adaptation.
