Morocco has secured its position as a global leader in the race toward carbon neutrality, rising to 8th place in the 2025 Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI), revealed on Wednesday at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan. The Kingdom now ranks ahead of major countries in environmental sustainability, including Germany, Norway, and Sweden.
In this prestigious index, Morocco is recognized as a key regional player in sustainable development and greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction. The CCPI report praised the country for its strong commitment to renewable energy, particularly its goal of generating 52% of its energy from renewable sources by 2030. Morocco’s progress in solar and wind energy projects also received commendation.
Morocco remains the top performer in Africa and the Arab world, with Denmark occupying the 4th position (the top three spots remain vacant). Compared to the 2024 edition, Morocco has advanced one place, surpassing prominent nations in decarbonization efforts, including Germany (16th), Norway (9th), and Sweden (11th).
The CCPI evaluates countries based on four key criteria: greenhouse gas emissions, renewable energy, energy use, and climate policy. The index assesses the climate performance of 63 countries, including individual European Union member states and the EU as a whole, serving as an independent tool for tracking global progress in addressing climate change
