Morocco’s Ambassador to China, Abdelkader El Ansari, highlighted the evolving Sino-Moroccan partnership and its future potential during a conference held Tuesday at Renmin University in Beijing.
Addressing an audience of students, professors and journalists, Ambassador El Ansari spoke of the deep-rooted ties between Morocco and China, dating back centuries, citing the historic journeys of Moroccan explorer Ibn Battuta to China and Chinese navigator Wang Dayuan to Morocco in the 14th century as early examples of cultural and commercial exchange.
These connections, he noted, underscored Morocco’s role as a vital commercial hub on the Silk Road, facilitating trade between China, Europe, and Africa.
The ambassador emphasized that the formal establishment of diplomatic relations in 1958 marked the beginning of a robust partnership, built on principles of mutual respect and solidarity. A defining moment in this relationship was the visit of King Mohammed VI to China in May 2016, which ushered in a strategic partnership between the two nations. This was followed by Morocco’s endorsement of the Belt and Road Initiative in 2017 through a memorandum of understanding.
On the conference’s sidelines, El Ansari held discussions with Renmin University’s vice president and deans, exploring avenues for academic collaboration. Talks focused on facilitating Moroccan students’ entry into the university and fostering exchanges between think tanks and research institutions from both countries, aiming to deepen educational and cultural ties.
