A court in Tinghir has sentenced a woman and her accomplice to prison for fraud and impersonating a lawyer and legal advisor. The pair were convicted of deceiving multiple victims, including those involved in ongoing legal cases, by falsely presenting themselves as legal professionals able to assist in resolving their legal matters.
On Monday, the Tineghir Court of First Instance sentenced the woman, the main defendant, to two years in prison. Her accomplice, a mediator from the rural areas, was sentenced to one year in prison. Both were convicted after being charged with fraud and impersonating a lawyer, human rights activist, and owner of a legal consultancy firm.
The case came to light earlier this month when the Tineghir public prosecutor ordered the arrest of the woman and her accomplice, who were detained and transferred to the local prison in Ouarzazate.
Authorities began their investigation after the woman allegedly deceived multiple victims by claiming she could solve their legal issues and represent them in court.
Police investigations revealed that the woman, who used various identities as a lawyer, rights activist, and legal consultant, successfully defrauded at least 15 victims, many of whom were involved in legal disputes. She allegedly exploited their trust, promising to help with their cases in exchange for payment.
The fraud scheme targeted vulnerable individuals, particularly those struggling with ongoing legal matters. Authorities have warned that further investigations are ongoing, and more victims may come forward.
