In a controversial move, Libya’s Minister of Interior from the Government of National Unity Imed Trabelsi announced that starting next month, the country’s “morality police” will be reinstated, targeting what he described as inappropriate behavior, including “inappropriate” hairstyles and clothing that do not align with the values of Libyan society.
Trabelsi also warned against women traveling without a male guardian and announced that the police will monitor gender mixing in public spaces like cafes.
Businesses, including cafes and restaurants, will face penalties if they allow inappropriate dress codes or behavior, with particular focus on young people, Trabelsi said.
Additionally, barbershops failing to comply with social and legal regulations will be shut down, Trabelsi said, adding that those “seeking personal freedom should go to Europe”.
