Portugal has overtaken Morocco as the leading supplier of tomatoes to Spain in the 2023/2024 season, according to recent data shared by the Spanish horticultural platform HortoInfo, with Morocco now dropping to second place.

The same source indicated that during the 2023/2024 season, the Kingdom exported 57.66 million kilos of tomatoes to Spain, accounting for 30.42% of Spain’s total imports. This amounted to 82.5 million euros, with an average sale price of 1.43 euros per kilo.

In contrast, back in the 2014/2015 season, Morocco had sent only 25.05 million kilos of tomatoes to Spain, valued at 22.49 million euros, with an average price of 0.90 euros per kilo. The growth between the two comparison years shows a significant increase of 130.10%.

Portugal, on the other hand, exported 79.4 million kilos of tomatoes to Spain during the 2023/2024 season, making up 41.90% of the total volume imported by Spain. This export had a value of 79.16 million euros, with an average price of 1.00 euros per kilo.

However, compared to the 2014/2015 season, Portugal saw a decrease in exports, as it had previously sent 87.9 million kilos, valued at 23.99 million euros, with an average price of 0.27 euro per kilo, resulting in a 9.67% drop in volume over this period.

HortoInfo mentioned that Spain set a new record for the value of its tomato imports in the 2023/2024 season, with Spanish operators spending a total of 223.92 million euros on 189.52 million kilos of tomatoes purchased from abroad.
