Moroccan international transport professionals are discussing the severe storm that recently hit northern Spain, amid reports from Spanish media of widespread damage affecting both transport workers and civilians.

Transport unions in Morocco, alongside truck owners, are actively assessing the situation and are in contact with their Spanish counterparts to determine the extent of damage incurred by Moroccan professionals during this natural disaster, particularly in the Valencia area and its surroundings.

Union sources confirmed to Hespress that some Moroccan trucks sustained damage during the storm on the AP7 highway, ranging from minor to severe impacts. Efforts are ongoing to verify reports of overturned Moroccan trucks amid these challenging weather conditions.

According to the Moroccan Association for International Road Transport (AMETRI), it has been confirmed that Moroccan trucks were part of the logistics fleets impacted along the route between Valencia and Barcelona, including instances of overturned vehicles.

The association is currently contacting various Moroccan companies involved in international road transport to gather information on the safety of their personnel in Spain. They noted, “We are also investigating reports of possible fatalities among Moroccan transport workers. Nothing is official at this time, but it is clear that some Moroccan trucks have been damaged, with some overturned on the road. The severity of the situation has made it difficult to ascertain the full impact on Moroccan professionals at this moment.”

In related comments, Eastern Hachimi, regional secretary for international transport in Souss-Massa, stated, “What we know so far is that the storm in Spain was unprecedented. Professionals have reported they have not seen anything like it in recent years, resulting in losses among Moroccan trucks. We are continuing to compile information on this.”

Hachimi explained to Hespress that the full extent of the losses would become clearer once access is restored to Valencia and the main AP7 highway, which serves as a vital route connecting southern and northern Spain and the rest of Europe. He added that some Moroccan transport workers in Spain had stopped at rest areas on Tuesday.

Hespress reviewed digital reports from Moroccan transport professionals currently in Spain, particularly on major routes connecting Valencia to northern Spain, which indicated that Moroccan trucks suffered various degrees of damage, including some that overturned and others that were damaged at the rear.

Recent statistics from Spanish media, citing the Integrated Operational Coordination Center of the Interior Ministry, revealed that 62 people have died due to flooding in the Valencia province. The local forensic institute has mobilized up to nine teams for recovery efforts.

El País reported that aerial teams, military psychologists, and trained dogs were deployed to locate bodies, as dozens spent the night stranded on trucks, cars, rooftops, or in service stations, trapped in their vehicles on closed roads. The torrential rain caused power outages for approximately 155,000 people and led to road closures in various eastern and southeastern provinces.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez confirmed via a post on X that he is closely monitoring reports of missing persons and the damage caused by the storm in recent hours.
