Medical students have high expectations for newly appointed Education Minister Azzedine Elmidaoui as they look to him to address their nearly year-long conflict with the government.
Midawi’s appointment comes as he steps into a role previously held by Abdel Latif Miraoui, who left significant challenges in the sector.
Elmidaoui, whose daughter who studies dentistry, is praised for his integrity and achievements, as colleagues say that he possesses the necessary skills to address the ongoing crisis in medical education.
Colleagues who have worked with him at Ibn Tofail University express optimism that his experience will be beneficial in overcoming current challenges.
Many view his appointment by King Mohammed VI as a positive development, anticipating his ability to reform the higher education sector, particularly given his track record at Ibn Tofail University.
Born in February 1959 in Rabat, Elmidaoui is the son of former Interior Minister Ahmed Midawi.
He completed his primary and secondary education in Rabat before moving to France, where he earned a PhD in chemistry from Montpellier.
He later returned to Morocco, obtaining a second doctorate and beginning his academic career as a professor at Mohammed V University in Rabat, and then moved to Ibn Tofail University in Kenitra, where he served as head of the Chemistry Department, later becoming dean of the Faculty of Sciences and president of the university.
Elmidaoui also served as director of scientific research at Mohammed VI International University in Ben Guerir, specializing in water, and is a member of the executive council of the World Water Organization.
He primarily resides at Mohammed VI University in Ben Guerir and makes regular visits to Ain Maataf in the Taounate region to honor his deceased parents.
