A suspected “spiritual healer” has been arrested in the Moroccan city of Tinghir for allegedly defrauding and extorting women. The man, who claimed to have healing powers and religious knowledge, used his position of trust to manipulate and exploit his victims.
According to local reports, the suspect, a man in his forties, would offer to help women with their personal and family problems. He then gained their trust and filmed them in compromising positions, exploiting their vulnerabilities. He subsequently used these images to blackmail them for money.
Authorities were alerted after two women filed complaints against the suspect, documenting their harrowing experiences with him. An investigation was launched, and police officers raided the suspect’s premises, discovering images of individuals with “magical and spiritual” inscriptions. The suspect was apprehended and placed under arrest.
Local human rights activist Abdurrahman Ait Ali highlighted the dangers of exploiting religious and social trust for immoral purposes. He urged people to be cautious when seeking help from individuals claiming unconventional healing abilities, emphasizing the need for vigilance and verification of their credibility.
The public prosecutor’s office in Tinghir reiterated its commitment to combating these criminal activities and encouraged the public to report any similar cases. They assured potential whistleblowers of confidentiality and legal protection.
After being held in custody, the suspect was brought before the public prosecutor’s office and charged with the crimes he allegedly committed. He was subsequently placed in pre-trial detention at the local prison in Ouarzazate.
