Morocco’s recent rainfall has significantly bolstered dam levels and agricultural prospects. The Ministry of Equipment and Water reported that the country’s water stress has been substantially alleviated following the September showers.

The Moulouya hydraulic basin, a crucial water source, has received a substantial influx of 246.47 million cubic meters of water since late August. Additionally, the Loukkos and Sebou basins have experienced significant replenishment, reaching 48.54% and 38.69% of their respective capacities.

These favorable conditions have instilled optimism among farmers, who anticipate a bountiful agricultural harvest. The Ministry of Equipment and Water expressed confidence that the rainfall will not only ensure a consistent supply of drinking water but also alleviate pressure on groundwater reserves and foster a prosperous agricultural season.

While the recent rains have been undoubtedly beneficial, Morocco’s water situation remains a delicate balance. The ministry continues to emphasize the importance of water conservation and urges citizens to adopt responsible water usage practices.

In the northern regions, the rainfall has stimulated increased agricultural activity as farmers prepare their land for the upcoming grain planting season. The Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, a significant contributor to national agricultural production, is witnessing a surge in farmer enthusiasm and competition to capitalize on the favorable conditions.

Farmers in the Larache region have expressed their gratitude for the rainfall, recognizing its potential to enhance seed germination and crop growth.

Nourredine Zaani, head of one of the milk production cooperatives in the Larache region, said that the recent rains are “very beneficial for the farmers of the region,” stressing that “the seeds that were planted will sprout after this rainfall.”

The livestock farming sector has also benefited from the recent rains, as government support measures have alleviated the financial burden on farmers. Subsidized barley and other feed resources have contributed to reducing production costs.

However, the same farmer added, “We have only one request from the government and the ministry, which is to look into our situation regarding the issue of fuel, because its price is expensive for us,” stressing that this fact “makes many farmers unable to plow and cultivate their lands.”

The rainfall has also positively impacted the olive crop, creating ideal conditions for harvesting. Farmers in olive-producing regions are actively preparing to intensify their harvesting efforts, seizing the opportunity presented by the recent rainfall.
