Morocco has made significant advances in its industrial sector, particularly in the automotive industry, according to Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch. Speaking at the second edition of the National Industry Day on Wednesday, he highlighted the country’s impressive production figures and strategic initiatives.

“In 2023 alone, Morocco produced over 570,000 vehicles, which translates to nearly one car per minute,” Akhannouch stated. He emphasized the country’s commitment to electric vehicles and battery manufacturing, noting the establishment of an integrated value chain that positions Morocco among the global leaders in these sectors.

Akhannouch attributed Morocco’s industrial success to ambitious strategies and a robust infrastructure network, citing the Tangier Med port—the largest in both the Mediterranean and Africa—as pivotal to this growth. He detailed how the extensive road network and industrial zones have further contributed to the sector’s development.

Over the past 25 years, Morocco’s industrial output has doubled, with industrial exports soaring sixfold, from 61 billion dirhams in 1999 to 376 billion dirhams in 2023. The number of industrial enterprises has nearly tripled, increasing from 4,500 in 1999 to around 13,000 today, while the sector now employs nearly a million people.

The government remains committed to creating a favorable business environment through initiatives such as the new investment charter, the “Morocco Digital 2030” strategy, and the establishment of 22 new industrial acceleration zones. Akhannouch explained that the investment charter will include special measures to support very small, small, and medium-sized enterprises, particularly those investing between 1 and 50 million dirhams.

Morocco has emerged as Africa’s leading car producer and a significant exporter to Europe. The aviation sector is also thriving, with a notable increase in exports of aviation-related products.

Despite facing global economic challenges, Morocco’s non-agricultural value added grew by 3.6% in 2023. The government is focused on ensuring that the industrial sector is well-equipped to enter a new era of economic sovereignty.
