Chile has repatriated a collection of Moroccan paleontological artifacts, UNESCO reported today.
The fossils were seized by Chilean customs authorities at San Antonio Port and Santiago Airport. After examination by experts from the National Monuments Council, their Moroccan origin was confirmed.
The repatriation was facilitated by the Ministry of Culture, the National Customs Service, the National Monuments Council, and the National Cultural Heritage Service.
José Luis Castro, Deputy Director of the National Customs Service, acknowledged the work of the customs inspectors involved in identifying and protecting the valuable cultural property.
Nélida Pozo Kudo, Director of the National Cultural Heritage Service, noted the cooperation between government agencies that led to the successful restitution.
The Ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco in Chile, Kenza El Ghali, expressed appreciation for Chile’s efforts in returning the valuable artifacts.
The repatriation of these paleontological pieces highlights the importance of international cooperation in safeguarding cultural heritage and combating illicit trafficking.
