The High Commission for Planning revealed in a report released for National Women’s Day that 86.8% of Moroccans reject the idea of gender equality in inheritance.

This rejection is notably higher in urban areas (89.2%) compared to rural areas (82.8%).

Men showed stronger opposition, with 92.3% firmly against this reform. Interestingly, despite being the primary beneficiaries, around 81.4% of women share this rejection, opposing the idea of equal shares in inheritance.

The findings are part of a survey titled “What Do Moroccans Think About Gender Equality?” which draws on data from the “National Survey on Households’ Perspectives on Sustainable Development Goals” conducted in 2016.

It highlights that about six out of ten Moroccans (58.4%) believe there is a lack of gender equality, with a significant disparity between rural (65.8%) and urban (52.4%) populations.

The report indicates a notable difference in perceptions of gender equality between men and women: 63.3% of women believe equality does not exist, compared to 54.8% of men. Younger individuals (18-29 years) are more likely to perceive inequality, with 63.6% expressing this view, while the percentage decreases among older age groups.

Factors influencing youth perceptions include evolving social norms and education, with older generations having been raised in more traditional environments. The report also notes that 31.5% of Moroccans see gender inequality in the job market, with 37.8% believing wage equality is not respected. Home labor division shows the greatest disparity, with 87.6% asserting a lack of equality in this area.

Most Moroccans support gender equality across various sectors, with 73.5% advocating for equal access to administrative roles, 71.1% for parliamentary representation, and 70.5% for local electoral positions. Education is prioritized for enhancing gender equality, emphasized by 65.3% of respondents, followed by employment (20.3%) and leadership roles (6.8%)
