Algerian authorities have designated vast regions in the country’s southeast as “epidemic hotspots,” classifying them as disaster areas due to a severe outbreak of malaria and diphtheria.
According to daily tabloid, Al Ahdath Al Maghribia, sources from the affected region report alarming rates of mortality, with estimates exceeding 50 deaths per day. Hospitals are overwhelmed by the influx of patients suffering from these infectious diseases.
Malaria, a mosquito-borne illness, can also be transmitted through blood transfusions and contaminated needles. If left untreated, the disease can rapidly progress to severe illness and be fatal within 24 hours.
