84% of Moroccans express intolerance towards having homosexuals as neighbors, surpassing the continental average of 74% among African countries, according to a recent poll conducted by the pan-African network Afrobarometer.

This reflects a 2 percentage point increase in intolerant attitudes toward homosexual individuals on average across 32 countries surveyed in both 2014/2015 and 2021/2023, with a similar trend seen in São Tomé and Príncipe and Nigeria.

However, intolerance towards homosexuals is even more pronounced in countries like Uganda, Sierra Leone, and Niger, reaching a staggering 94%, while in Senegal and Gambia, it stands at a similarly high 93%.

Concerning intolerance towards foreigners and immigrants, only 22% of Moroccans express discomfort with having them as neighbors, placing Morocco above the continental average of 19% among African countries. South Africa leads in this regard, with 39% of its population expressing intolerance, followed by Sudan at 35% and Botswana at 29%.

The findings revealed that only 48% of Moroccans trust other citizens, notably lower than the rates in Mali (87%), Tanzania (86%), and Niger (82%). However, trust levels are even lower in São Tomé and Príncipe (26%), Sudan (30%), and Angola (37%).

The survey additionally noted that Morocco is one of the few countries where unequal treatment under the law is not widely perceived as the norm, with 56% of respondents sharing this view, unlike in Nigeria, where 83%, Gabon (80%), and Senegal (79%) said it happens often or always.

It also found that only 35% of Moroccans believe the government often treats people unfairly based on their economic status, which is below the continental average of 47%. However, this perception is particularly strong in Tunisia (72%) and Nigeria (67%).
