The National Committee of Interns and Residents has announced nationwide sit-ins today, September 26th, at various university hospitals. This show of solidarity comes in response to the violent crackdown on medical students’ sit-in outside the Faculty of Medicine in Rabat, last night.
In its statement, the committee reiterated its clear stand against “all forms of repression and assaults on freedom of expression”. They voiced deep indignation and concern over the recent events in the capital where “medical students were subjected to a flagrant violation of their right to peaceful protest”, leaving several students injured.
The committee condemned this “blatant attack on students’ rights,” noting that it not only signals a dangerous decline in the freedom of peaceful expression but also escalates tensions within the healthcare and education sectors.
It stressed that this action has “crossed all acceptable boundaries” and represents a serious blow to the principles of freedom and dignity protected in the country’s constitution and international law.
The committee urged the responsible authorities to fulfill their legal and moral obligations by protecting the rights of students and holding those responsible for the assault accountable.
It also called for swift intervention to de-escalate the situation and to find practical and realistic solutions to resolve the crisis, noting that an attack on peaceful protest is an attack on “all doctors, students, and anyone who believes in justice and dignity.”
The violent crackdown marks a new escalation in the contentious medical education dispute, which has been ongoing for the past ten months without any resolution in sight.
