A recent study conducted by Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. has placed Morocco in the 57th position globally in its Digital Transformation Index (DTI) for 2024.
Despite this ranking, Morocco has secured the top spot in the North African region, outperforming its neighbors Tunisia and Algeria.
The DTI, which evaluates a country’s digital maturity across various dimensions, assessed 77 countries, representing 93% of the global GDP and 80% of the world’s population.
The index is based on over 40 sub-indicators grouped into four main categories: connectivity, digital foundation, green energy, and policies and ecosystems.
Morocco scored 34.3 points, categorizing it among the “emerging” countries. The United States topped the list with 78.8 points, followed by Singapore, Sweden, Finland, and Denmark.
In the Middle East and North Africa region, the United Arab Emirates led the pack, ranking 16th globally and falling under the “frontrunner” category. Saudi Arabia came in 23rd, followed by Bahrain, Kuwait, and Oman.
The report noted the increasing global investment in information and communications technology (ICT), reaching nearly $5 trillion in the previous year.
The report also drew attention to the growing competition among countries to accelerate digital transformation, with the promise of substantial economic returns.
Every dollar invested in the digital economy, the report suggested, could yield over $8 in returns.
The ICT industry, according to the study, is continually developing innovative tools to drive sustainable development. Digital technologies can be used to predict climate change, improve disaster preparedness, and mitigate risks.
To further advance their digital transformation, the report recommended that governments prioritize digital infrastructure development, similar to transportation and electricity. Increased investment and supportive policies in this area are crucial.
The report also stressed the need to accelerate the digitalization of industries, emphasizing that this is a gradual process requiring careful planning and a multi-layered approach to building smart ICT infrastructure.
