The United Nations General Assembly voted Wednesday to formally demand that Israel withdraw from the occupied Palestinian territories within 12 months, a move welcomed by numerous Arab and Islamic states as “historic.”
The resolution, which passed with 124 votes in favor and 14 against, calls for the cessation of Israeli military presence in these areas, following an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) deeming the occupation unlawful since 1967.
Among the countries supporting the resolution was Morocco, reinforcing its commitment to the Palestinian cause amid ongoing conflicts.
The proposal was part of a special emergency session addressing “Illegal Israeli actions in Occupied East Jerusalem and other occupied Palestinian territories.” It was adopted with backing from over 40 nations, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, and Jordan.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas hailed the resolution as a significant victory for Palestinian rights and a reflection of international consensus supporting the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
He characterized the resolution as reviving hope for the Palestinian people amidst what he described as ongoing aggression and genocide in Gaza.
The resolution demands not only Israel’s withdrawal but also a halt to new settlements and the return of seized land and property, alongside provisions for displaced Palestinians to return.
It calls on states to consider suspending arms supplies to Israel if there are reasonable grounds to suspect they may be used in occupied territories.
Despite widespread support, Israel immediately rejected the resolution, labeling it as “cynical” and “distorted.” Israeli officials claimed it encourages violence and undermines peace efforts.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry characterized the decision as disconnected from reality, while Hamas welcomed it, stating it demonstrated solidarity with the Palestinian struggle.
This vote arrives in the context of escalating violence, following the October 7 attack by Hamas that has resulted in significant casualties on both sides.
The conflict has claimed over 41,000 Palestinian lives, predominantly civilians, according to Gaza health authorities. Israel’s military operations have been met with calls for an immediate ceasefire from the international community, but these have largely gone unheeded.
Morocco’s role in supporting the resolution highlights its strategic position within the Arab world and its commitment to the Palestinian cause.
As the situation continues to evolve, the UN’s decision emphasizes the growing international consensus on the need for a resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, though the path forward remains fraught with challenges.
