Food-related waste is the primary component for nearly three-quarters of Moroccan households (72%), according to a recent report by The World Risk Poll 2024, powered by Gallup. This trend mirrors the global trend, where food waste is a major component for 38% of households worldwide.

Titled “A World of Waste: Risks and Opportunities in Household Waste Management,” the study found that the kingdom came in fourth among the top 10 countries with the highest rates of food-related waste disposal, making it the leading North African and Arab countries in this category.

In Africa, the Democratic Republic of the Congo topped the list at 79%, followed by Côte d’Ivoire at 76% and Gabon at 75%.

In the Middle East and North Africa region, Lebanon followed Morocco with 71% of households identifying food waste as the primary component of household waste, trailed by Kuwait at 70%. Israel, with 61%, ranked third regionally but placed 10th globally.

The findings further revealed that 60% of North African households do not separate their waste before disposal, compared to only 33% who reported doing so.

Waste separation was also uncommon among households in Central and Western Africa, with 69% not separating waste, and in Southern Africa, where 61% reported the same; only 24% and 27% of households in these regions, respectively, said they separate their waste.

In contrast, waste separation was found to be highly common among households in Australia and New Zealand, Northern and Western Europe, and Southern Europe, with 90% of households in the first two regions and 83% in the latter regularly sorting their waste.

The study revealed that waste non-separation is more common among low-income households, with 63% not sorting their waste, among people aged 15-29, with 47%, and among men, with 42%.

In contrast, 81% of higher-income households separate their waste, 60% of those aged 65 and older do the same, and 56% of women also separate their waste.
