Moroccan Railway Sees Strong Growth in Passenger, Freight Transport in H1-2024

Morocco’s Railway Office (ONCF) has announced impressive growth figures for the first half of 2024, transporting 26.4 million passengers, a 7% increase compared to the same period last year. This surge in passenger traffic has bolstered ONCF’s revenue, with the Passenger segment generating over MAD 1.26 billion, marking an 8% rise from June 2023.

A key contributor to this growth is Al-Boraq, Morocco’s high-speed train, which continues to solidify its reputation as a symbol of sustainable mobility and innovation. Al-Boraq transported more than 2.6 million passengers during the first half of the year, reflecting a significant 14% year-on-year increase.

Freight transport also saw robust performance, with a 32% rise in transported volumes, totaling 9 million metric tons. This increase was largely driven by a remarkable 68% boost in phosphate transport compared to the first half of 2023. Consequently, revenue from freight and phosphate transport surged by 23%, reaching MAD 815 million.

Overall, ONCF’s consolidated revenue grew by 16%, exceeding 2.55 billion dirhams by the end of June. Social revenue also experienced an upward trend, increasing by 12% to nearly 2.18 billion dirhams.

In terms of capital expenditures (CAPEX), ONCF invested 811 million dirhams, primarily aimed at maintaining operational performance and enhancing service quality.

The report also highlighted a 4% reduction in ONCF’s debt, which now stands at 41.9 billion dirhams as of June 2024. The organization has embarked on a new development cycle with several major projects planned for completion by 2030, including the expansion of the high-speed rail network, the development of a regional express network, and the acquisition of new rolling stock.

In addition to these achievements, ONCF has made significant strides in reducing its environmental impact. The company released its carbon footprint report for 2023, revealing a substantial 20% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, despite the increased use of train travel.
