Khaled Ait Taleb, Morocco’s Minister of Health and Social Protection, issued an urgent circular to regional health delegates and directors following the World Health Organization’s declaration on August 14 of monkeypox as a public health emergency of international concern.
The circular, reviewed by Hespress, outlines updates to the Ministry’s surveillance and response procedures established in 2022. The revisions focus on case definitions, treatment methods, and notification processes to ensure early detection and prompt treatment of monkeypox cases to prevent further spread within Morocco.
Regional and provincial health officials have been instructed to implement these updated measures urgently, collaborating with both public and private health structures.
As of August 15, the Ministry reported detecting five cases of monkeypox up to March 2024. These cases, identified through a proactive national plan activated in June 2022, were mostly imported and did not result in local transmission. All affected individuals have recovered without complications.
The Ministry reassured the public about Morocco’s vigilance and preparedness, highlighting that no new cases have been reported for months. The country continues to monitor the global situation closely and adjust its national response plan according to international developments and WHO recommendations.
