The Ministry of Health and Social Protection has announced heightened surveillance measures in response to a renewed outbreak of monkeypox (M-pox) in several African countries.
Following the World Health Organization’s (WHO) declaration of a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), Morocco has updated its national response plan to align with the evolving epidemiological situation and WHO guidelines.
This marks the second time in two years that the WHO has issued a PHEIC for monkeypox. While the initial outbreak, declared in July 2022, was eventually downgraded, cases continue to be reported globally.
Morocco has proactively managed the disease, with a national plan in place since June 2022. To date, only five imported cases have been detected, none of which led to local transmission or severe complications.
The Ministry reassures the public of Morocco’s preparedness and vigilance, and pledges to provide regular updates on the situation.
