Over 300 migrants attempted to breach the Tarajal border in Ceuta during a mass crossing attempt that spanned from Sunday night into Monday morning, placing immense pressure on both maritime and ground security forces, according to Spanish news outlet El Mundo.
With the support of the Moroccan Royal Gendarmerie, Spanish authorities worked on both land and sea to prevent migrants from reaching Ceuta via nearby beaches in Morocco.
The rescue vessel Salvamar Atria was deployed to assist in search and rescue operations, while Red Cross ambulances transported over 300 individuals who were successfully brought ashore.
El Mundo indicated that approximately 80% of individuals treated by the Red Cross following the mass migration attempt were minors, based on visual assessments.
It also noted that the Civil Guard intercepted over 170 people at sea during the preceding night, bringing the total number of rescued migrants to nearly 500.
The same source highlighted that most exhibited symptoms of mild hypothermia and minor injuries.
It also mentioned that while children were transferred to care facilities, non-Moroccan adults from the Maghreb region were processed at the police station. The remaining individuals were returned to Morocco.
El Mundo noted that the influx of minors during the recent mass migration attempt has overwhelmed Ceuta’s capacity, forcing authorities to reopen the Nueva Esperanza center used during the 2021 crisis to address the emergency situation.
