French President Emmanuel Macron has officially conveyed to King Mohammed VI that he “considers the present and future of Western Sahara to lie within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty,” according to a statement from the Royal Office released on Tuesday.
In his message, delivered on the 25th anniversary of Throne Day, President Macron reiterated France’s steadfast stance on this issue, underscoring that France “intends to align its actions nationally and internationally with this position.”
The French President emphasized that “autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty” is the framework for resolving the Western Sahara issue.
Macron affirmed France’s clear and unwavering support for Morocco’s 2007 autonomy plan, describing it as the sole basis for a fair, lasting, and negotiated solution in line with United Nations Security Council resolutions.
President Macron noted the growing international consensus around the autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty and assured that France will actively support the efforts of the United Nations Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy. He urged all parties to unite for a political settlement that is within reach.
Commending Morocco’s initiatives to foster economic and social development in the Moroccan Sahara, President Macron pledged that France will back Morocco in these efforts for the benefit of the local populations.
