Moroccan citizens stranded in Gaza are frustrated with the ongoing delay by Moroccan authorities in updating the status of their evacuation to Egypt via the Rafah crossing.
Since the Israeli army took control of the Palestinian side of Rafah, the evacuation process has halted. Those stranded fear being forgotten in the conflict zone.
The situation is critical for those in northern Gaza who cannot move south to Rafah. Some have opted to pay for an alternate route through the Kerem Shalom crossing.
Bloomberg reported that Israel is considering letting the EU and Palestinians manage Rafah. Meanwhile, Egypt insists the crossing should be handed over to the Palestinian Authority.
Zeina Hamid Mohammed Haboush, a Palestinian with Moroccan citizenship, is stuck in northern Gaza. She has had no contact with the Moroccan embassy in Ramallah since the Israeli takeover. Her attempts to reach the embassy have been unsuccessful.
“The Moroccan embassy in Ramallah has not communicated with us since Tel Aviv took control of the Rafah crossing. When we contact them, we receive no response,” Haboush told Hespress AR.
Haboush’s family remains in their home amid increasing bombardments. While she did not pay for the Kerem Shalom route, her cousin Wasim Ali Haboush did but was barred from crossing due to his age.
Haboush is calling on Moroccan authorities to provide updates and find a way to evacuate them from north to south, suggesting that the lack of response may be due to waiting for the crossing to reopen.
Ahmed Al-Maqousi, another Moroccan-Palestinian whose family has been unable to cross, reports that the Moroccan embassy in Ramallah has cut off contact with those stranded.
“Nothing is completely clear about the remaining evacuation operations, as confirmed by the lack of communication from the Moroccan embassy in Ramallah and Cairo,” Al-Maqoussi told Hespress Ar.
