HYUNDAI ROTEM has become the closest bidder for a $1.6 billion deal to supply Morocco with 168 trains, including 18 high-speed trains, locally manufactured in the kingdom. Delivery to the National Office of Railways is expected between 2027 and 2030.

Companies are now bidding for a deal with Morocco following an announcement last year by the National Office of Railways requesting the acquisition of new trains, including high-speed trains to Marrakech, and the development of a national railway industry to produce export-ready trains, akin to the automotive and aviation sectors.

An announcement that resulted in seven companies bidding for the contract, the newest being HYUNDAI ROTEM alongside other bids from Talgo and CAF from Spain, Alstom from France, Hitachi from Japan, CRCC from China, and Siemens Mobility from Germany.

HYUNDAI ROTEM is a Korean multinational known for its pivotal role in manufacturing railway rolling stock and defense systems, owned by HYUNDAI MOTOR Group, and was the company responsible for the Seoul Metropolitan Subway, UAE’s Dubai Metro, and the Turkish State Railways.‌

HYUNDAI ROTEM has emerged as a primary competitor against French, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, and German offers, following recent meetings between its officials and the Moroccan Minister of Industry and Trade, Riad Mezzour, in Casablanca.

The meeting was confirmed by Minister Mezzour in a Facebook post stating that the meeting happened in Casablanca with Yong-Bae Lee, the CEO of HYUNDAI ROTEM.

‌

It’s worth noting that discussions with the Korean representatives also touched upon their industrial expertise in the military sector.
