The 2024 Global Terrorism Index report labeled Morocco as a safe country with no terrorism impact. Morocco scored zero on the impact of terrorism indicating that the country is among the safest countries in the world with no terrorist threats.
Morocco was ranked last in the most impacted countries by terrorism at 89th spot alongside multiple countries that scored also zero on the impact of terrorism index, most of which were from Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and southern Africa.
The annually updated index uses indicators such as the total number of terrorist incidents each year, the total number of deaths caused by terrorist attacks, the total number of injuries caused by terrorist attacks, and the extent of property damage caused by terrorist attacks.
It’s worth noting that Morocco is an exception in the region, as the kingdom alongside Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro, and Albania were the only Mediterranean countries to score zero on the index.
The report placed five Arab countries, including Morocco and Mauritania, along with Kuwait, Qatar, and Oman, at the forefront scoring zero, indicating they are among the safest countries in the world with no terrorist threats.
The report ranked Burkina Faso as the most dangerous country globally, Algeria and Libya were ranked 39th and 44th globally, respectively, as countries facing “low” terrorist threats, and Egypt was among the countries facing “medium” terrorist threats, While Iraq and Syria were ranked 22nd and 5th respectively, as the two Arab countries facing the highest security and terrorism risks.
It’s worth noting that Israel ranked 2nd on the index as one of the most dangerous countries worldwide, however, the report did not clarify what constitutes a terrorist attack, what prevents the index for the case of Israel, and other countries with similar cases to be universally agreed upon, especially with the ongoing war, and the occupied Palestinian territories.
Scoring well on the Global Terrorism Index (GTI) benefits a country by enhancing its reputation as a safe destination, attracting tourism, and boosting foreign investment. It contributes to economic growth, political stability, and improved quality of life for citizens.
