Madrid’s mayor, José Luis Martínez-Almeida of the Popular Party (PP), has opted out of hosting a customary welcome ceremony for Sahrawi children participating in the Polisario Front’s “Holidays in Peace” summer initiative.
Martínez-Almeida’s decision has drawn significant criticism, particularly from supporters of the Polisario Front, as many mayors from his party in other regions have traditionally welcomed these children. This divergence in approach within the PP has raised questions about the motives behind the mayor’s choice.
The reasoning behind Martínez-Almeida’s decision remains unclear, but it contrasts sharply with the reception these children typically receive in other Spanish regions. The Polisario-affiliated media often covers these ceremonies, which are seen by some as symbolic political gestures.
Khadijetou El Mohatar, Polisario’s representative in Madrid, expressed her dissatisfaction on social media, sarcastically noting that the mayor’s schedule apparently did not permit time for welcoming the Sahrawi children to Spain.
In a move adding further political dimension, Tesh Sidi, a member of the far-left coalition Sumar and of Sahrawi descent, invited the children to visit the Spanish House of Representatives.
Meanwhile, the Forum of Support for Autonomists of Tindouf (FORSATIN) has accused the Polisario of politicizing “Holidays in Peace,” alleging that the program is being used to advance political agendas rather than focusing solely on the children’s well-being.
