Tensions rise as opposition walkout from parliament deepens crisis with government

A dramatic walkout staged by opposition parties during the Monday weekly oral questions session in the House of Representatives has become the latest in a series of clashing episodes within Parliament.

The opposition, comprising the Socialist Group-Ittihadie Opposition, the Haraki Group, the Progress and Socialism Group, and the PJD Parliamentary Group, walked in protest against Abdel Latif Miraoui’s absence as minister of higher education amid protests and boycotts staged by medical student bodies across the country.

Four other ministers were absent from the session, which the opposition condemned as a breach of basic norms.

The opposition groups emphasized their repeated, fruitless attempts to discuss urgent matters, which were systematically blocked by the House bureau from reaching the government.

Rachid Hamouni, leading the Progress and Socialism Party group, clarified that their withdrawal was not about political maneuvering but about pressing the government for action. He emphasized the plight of medical students facing academic jeopardy due to government inaction over six months, underlining the opposition’s unwavering determination.

Hamouni stressed bipartisan concern, stating, “Whether in majority or opposition, our duty is to hold the government accountable.” He criticized procedural lapses that hindered urgent discussions.

Expressing surprise at the government’s indifference, Hamouni confirmed their return contingent on substantive discussions with the Minister of Higher Education.

Mohamed Chaouki of the National Rally of Independents criticized the boycott, suggesting unity among opposition parties often fails to contribute constructively to legislative progress.

He acknowledged differing viewpoints within opposition ranks but commended the government’s responsive stance despite disagreements.

The opposition calls for an urgent reassessment of the government’s approach to parliamentary responsibilities and demands that ministers fulfill their constitutional duties by engaging in meaningful dialogue and addressing pressing issues.
