Morocco exceeds import average of dates for 3 seasons before end of the year

Morocco has imported 103,000 tons of dates in the period from October 2023 to March 2024, which is higher than the average imports over the full last three seasons.

However, it is expected that this season’s full results in Morocco may still be slightly lower than the previous one, meaning a slight decline in imports in the period from April to September.

The reason behind this expected decline is the increased local date production in the kingdom increased by 7% in 2023, reaching 115,000 tons according to estimates from the Ministry of Agriculture.

In an analysis bt East Fruit, date imports into the country usually hit their peak around Ramadan, with the highest volumes recorded just before and during the holy month.

Interestingly, in the 2023/24 season, this peak was reached earlier in February, suggesting that the rest of the season will likely see reduced import volumes compared to the previous year.

It is worth noting that Morocco ranks as the second-largest date importer globally, with 90% of date imports coming from four the UAE, Egypt, Tunisia, and Algeria in the current season, thanks to active growth in total exports.

East Fruit expects that Egypt may surpass the UAE in exports to Morocco, Egypt has set a record for date exports to Morocco in the 2022/23 season, and even with some months to go the exporter has already exceeded it by exporting 33,000 tons of dates to the kingdom.
