Morocco’s unwavering commitment to Artificial Intelligence (AI) was recently showcased in an article, detailing the kingdom’s dedicated efforts as presented by the Moroccan delegation at a public meeting of the African Union’s Peace and Security Council held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The article explained that Morocco is at the forefront of AI development on a global scale. By taking a proactive role in shaping the first UN resolution on AI, it said, Morocco demonstrated its significant interest and commitment to this field.

The same source shed light on Morocco’s notable involvement in drafting the pioneering UN resolution on AI, titled “Harnessing the Potential of Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy AI Systems for Development.”

This achievement was “a point of pride for the delegation,” described the article, adding that the resolution, jointly sponsored by Morocco, the United States, and later by 123 member states and adopted by the UN on March 21, 2024, reflected “Morocco’s foresight and dedication to technological advancement.”

The same source went on to emphasize that “Morocco’s leading role in negotiating this resolution aligns with its substantial contributions to the field within Africa.”

This commitment is further demonstrated by Morocco hosting the 1st High-Level Forum on AI in Africa in Rabat, in partnership with UNESCO, which saw participation from over 30 countries.

“This event demonstrated Morocco’s active engagement in employing AI to create innovative solutions for African communities and foster continent-wide development.”

However, the article mentioned Morocco grapples with several challenges in advancing its AI agenda, including securing ample investment in AI research and infrastructure, addressing workforce skill gaps, managing data privacy concerns, and aligning AI development with ethical standards.

The same source emphasized that “Morocco must navigate issues related to job displacement due to automation, ethical use of AI, and ensuring that AI benefits are distributed equitably across society.”
