The European Union (EU) has commended Morocco for its “exemplary” commitments to tackling the climate emergency.

Jean Christophe Filori, head of cooperation at the EU delegation, praised Morocco’s adherence to the 2015 Paris Agreement at a conference organized by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

“Morocco has taken the climate emergency to heart, as evidenced by its exemplary commitments,” Filori stated at the event themed “Decarbonization, Challenges, and Procedures for Moroccan Businesses.”

Filori emphasized the strong bilateral partnership between the EU and Morocco, which he described as the first of its kind globally. This partnership supports Morocco’s reforms in renewable and new energy sectors, launched in 2021 to foster sustainable production and consumption methods. It aims to address ecological transition and climate challenges while supporting economic growth post-COVID-19.

Since its inception, the EU-Morocco Green Partnership has facilitated fruitful technical and political dialogue with Moroccan authorities. This dialogue includes workshops that bring together political actors, decision-makers, and associations to discuss green themes.

In a move to further bolster Morocco’s climate and energy transition policies, the EU announced a €50 million budget support program during COP28. Filori also revealed that a new budget support program focusing on the green economy and the decarbonization of Moroccan industry is being developed. He detailed the EU’s initiatives to assist private companies in their decarbonization efforts.

“The fight against climate change is at the heart of the joint EU-Morocco action,” Filori said, stressing that achieving carbon neutrality requires funding, ideas, energy, and collective mobilization.

Antoine Sallé de Chou, EBRD director in Morocco, noted that the conference was the third of its kind, following events in Tangier and Agadir. He praised the positive dynamic in Morocco’s economy and investment landscape, which he said reflects the country’s understanding of decarbonization and green financing opportunities.

Sallé de Chou highlighted the successful cooperation between Morocco and the EBRD, expressing optimism about accelerating their activities in the country. This dynamic includes various sectors such as industry, renewable energy, and SMEs, which are a major priority.

Omar Tajmouati, president of the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises (CGEM) in Fès-Meknès, underscored the necessity for Moroccan businesses to view decarbonization as an opportunity rather than a constraint. He highlighted CGEM’s pioneering role in establishing a precise CSR code to encourage social and environmental responsibility among businesses.

Tajmouati detailed CGEM’s support program, which equips companies with the tools, resources, and information needed to reduce their emissions. He stressed the importance of financing in achieving decarbonization goals.

The conference showcased successful decarbonization experiences in Morocco and highlighted the financing tools offered by the EBRD and the EU to support businesses in their ecological transition.
