Young Moroccans, aged between 19 and 27, have fallen victim to a sophisticated scam promising lucrative jobs in China’s e-commerce sector, and are now held for ransom on the Thailand-Myanmar border.
As domestic authorities investigate this unprecedented forced-labor incident, here’s a rundown of what you need to know about the case.
How did the Moroccan nationals get scammed?
Moroccan authorities believe the gang holding the Moroccans has intermediary agents in the Kingdom and abroad. One of the kidnapped victims was residing in Dubai, when he was approached with a tempting job offer.
Authorities said in a statement that the Moroccan nationals were promised “e-commerce” jobs in China, offering a highly attractive salary.
The gang deployed all necessary means to reassure the Moroccans, as family members say the criminals booked their flights and hotels and accompanied them throughout the trip.
Why were the Moroccans kidnapped?
The held nationals were lured for forced labor, defined by the International Labor Organization as “people are employed against their will with the threat of destitution, detention, or violence, including death.”
Families of kidnapped Moroccans report the kidnapped endure grueling 17-hour workdays in electronic fraud operations, followed by minimal rest, and meager compensation that they then are forced to spend within the compound they’re held in food and basic necessities.
Reportedly, up to 158 Moroccans are held in the forced-labor compounds under the gang’s control, alongside hundreds more from different countries across the world.
Why are rescue operations so complicated?
The Moroccan nationals are reportedly held in highly secure compounds located on the Myanmar–Thailand border.
The border separating the two countries measures a whopping 2,416 km. For reference, that is roughly the length of the Moroccan Atlantic coastline, from Tangier to the Guergarat passage in the Sahara (2,235.4 km).
In addition, the Myanmar-Thailand border terrain is characterized by diverse landscapes ranging from dense jungles to mountainous regions. It is rugged and challenging, with dense vegetation covering large swathes of the border area.
The border region features mountain ranges creating natural barriers between the two countries. These mountains are often covered in thick forests, providing ample cover and hiding spots.
Overall, the Myanmar-Thailand border terrain presents numerous challenges for navigation and surveillance for both neighboring countries, making it an ideal location for illicit activities such as smuggling and human trafficking, as well as providing cover for armed groups and militias.
How is China involved?
Since news of the kidnapping broke, the Thai and Chinese ambassadors to Morocco have each expressed their countries’ readiness to closely collaborate with Moroccan authorities to free the hostages.
The Chinese embassy in Rabat was one of the protest points for the victims’ families demanding the nationals’ rescue. The families claim that the gangs holding the Moroccans hostage are made up of Chinese nationals.
China additionally neighbors Myanmar from the east, making it a close ally country that could intervene in helping facilitate the Moroccans’ rescue mission.
