Moroccan authorities coordinated the rescue of two Spanish sailors from their sailboat on Sunday in the Strait of Gibraltar after it sustained damage from orcas and was taking on water, Spanish media reported.
Spanish authorities were initially prepared to assist, but Morocco took charge due to the sailboat’s location in their waters. An oil tanker, “Lascaux”, was diverted to the scene and retrieved the two crew members. The sailboat sank after being left adrift. The rescued sailors were disembarked in Gibraltar later that evening.
The incident was one of the first known this year by killer whales and occurred around 9 a.m. Sunday.
