A recent report by the King Abdul-Aziz Al Saoud Foundation for Islamic Studies and Human Science unveiled the state of publishing in Morocco for 2022-2023, with 3482 titles produced, in addition to approximately 496 Moroccan magazines, 93 of which were digital.

The same report found that print publications accounted for 92% of Morocco’s publishing output in the covered fields, while digital publications constituted only 8%, mainly from public institutions and research organizations.

It stated that private professional publishers still face challenges in digital publishing due to economic fragility and the reading habits of Moroccan audiences. The belief in free digital content persists, complained the same source, contributing to a decline in the total of recorded digital materials.

As to the language of these publications, the report estimated that Moroccan publications in Arabic comprised over 78% of total publications in literary, humanities, and social sciences fields.

French-language publications accounted for over 17%, followed by English-language publications at over 2.5%. Amazigh-language publications, added the same source, represented less than 1.51% of total Moroccan publications.

The foundation identified 53 print authors in the Amazigh language during the covered period, averaging less than 27 authors in one year, representing less than 1% of total Moroccan publications.

Most publications originated from the Royal Institute of Amazigh Culture in Rabat, reported the foundation, with the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region leading in Amazigh-language publishing.

It highlighted the literary dominance in Amazigh-language publishing with 43 creative texts, stressing that “despite the official adoption of the Tifinagh script in 2003, there is still fragmentation in script standardization.”

The Latin alphabet predominated in 39 releases, 20 in a unified Latin script and 19 in a dual script format, while only 7 titles are in the Tifinagh script, added the same source.

The report also summarized Moroccan digital publishing in humanities and social sciences, totaling 191 titles. It noted “a significant presence of French-language publications (84 titles), followed by Arabic (63 titles) and English.”

Economic studies constituted 38.74% of digital publishing, followed by political and strategic studies at 23.03% and social studies at 10.47%.
